Video relating to my scheme

August Rush guitar slap song - a short clip from the film August Rush, where August discovers his musical talent for the first time. I really enjoy watching and listening to this clip - I feel the guitar music gives a positive, warming feel. The cinematography depicts light, openness - full of resonance, which the music complements, creating an atmospheric quality I want with my space. It is obviously "rhythmic", with a driving and constant beat, yet is never static, with plenty of "flavour". The guitarist for the scene, Kaki King, employs slap guitar techniques, an unconventional but satisfying way to play the instrument.

Sketchup Attempt: Artists Work + Using Textures

I started my model again- the feedback I got for my second scheme was it was "more like geometric shapes than an architectural space" so I have gone back to my first scheme of rhythmic/flavour to try and improve. The above ground contains constant cube-like structures to give a repetitive effect- although they are inconsistent in overall and window size, as musical rhythm is not usually static. There are also thin, curved structures interweaving throughout the building, to highlight the sense of fluidity and freedom I believe music evokes. The crescendo-shape inspired stair leads to the ground floor, and is suspended by sets of 5 black strings, which are meant to look like the 5 bar lines of a musical staff (they could also be interpreted as a violin's strings, if we pretend there are just 4). The below ground is pretty rough, but is meant to be "flavour", with its interesting shapes.

Stairs

Different ideas for stairs based on my original scheme (rhythmic/flavour).

Two stairs for rhythmic/flavour with two sections each.

Two stairs for a second scheme chosen from my original sketch sections - journey/perform (below), with two sections each. Developed section into Sketchup model including the stairs. I think I interpreted the task wrongly, and was meant to stay on the original sketch section. Jacky recommends I should go back to my original scheme, and I agree, I like it better/am more comfortable with it.

Trying to use Sketchup

Here is my first attempt at using Sketchup to create a 3D model design. I struggled to use Sketchup (/am hopeless with computers) and grew impatient with it quickly. Throw in some terrible time management and not getting around to watching all the video tutorials, and voila - my model. But I got some helpful feedback in my class today, and am going to learn how to use it properly. Cool beans.

This is the section sketch it was based upon, using the words 'rhythmic' and 'flavour' for above and below. As you can see, the below ground part of the building doesn't really accurately depict what it was meant to because I'm a Sketchup rookie.

The Datum: Sketch Sections

18 sketch sections above and below a datum based on and inspired by the words: strength, journey, majestic / ostinato, perform, rhythmic / flavour, envelope, delicate

A) A CREATIVE WORK
For my architectural history class last year, I drew Alberti's San Andrea in pen/watercolour. I've always loved drawing, but I didn't study art subjects for my HSC, so before coming to uni, my drawing was always very casual, simple. So when I had to start submitting my drawings for that class (to be marked??!), I didn't feel comfortable with it at all. But with time and practice, I learnt a lot about drawing and I particularly like this piece because, to me, its a reminder of where I began to understand more about how to draw a building and develop (hopefully) some more skill.

B) A PIECE OF GREAT ARCHITECTURE
The Pantheon, Paris is a beautiful building of great detail, inside and out. I've been lucky enough to visit it when I was younger, but now appreciate it even more after learning more about the history of the architecture.

C) AN ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH / SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL
This is a photo I took of my sister - absolutely on top of the world - at Jervis Bay, a town on the south coast that my family recently travelled to. The most beautiful person I know at the most beautiful beach I've been to!
